Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a normal part of aging. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop a cataract. Although cataracts may seem frightening, advancements in technology have made cataract surgery one of the safest and most successful surgeries in the United States today.

A cataract is a clouding of all or part of the normally clear lens within your eye. This causes blurred or distorted vision. Specific diets or laser treatments will not lessen the effect of cataracts. Cataract surgery can restore your vision long before you experience a loss of vision that interferes with your daily activities.

The Laurel Eye Clinic offers the most advanced options to customize your vision after cataract surgery. This customization is based on your individual lifestyle. We currently offer three options:

  • Monofocal (traditional) lens package
  • Enhanced cataract / toric lens package
  • Deluxe multifocal lens package

The surgeons will help you decide which lens option is best for you. The following page provides more information on the various options.

Traditional Monofocal Lens Package

A monofocal lens is a single vision lens implant which will correct your distance vision. After surgery, you will need eyeglasses for near vision activities, such as reading, shaving, sewing, and dialing the telephone. Medicare and most private insurance carriers will pay 80% of your cataract surgery and the monofocal lens. This is basic coverage.

Enhanced Cataract / Toric Lens Package

With this package, you will receive the traditional monofocal lens along with additional refractive services to correct your vision. Many patients interested in Monovision will choose this option. This package is available at an additional cost. Financing options are available for this option.

Toric lenses are designed to correct the distance vision of patients with a significant amount of astigmatism. A traditional monofocal lens will eliminate the cataract but the patient will still need correction for both near and distance vision because of the astigmatism. A toric lens will reduce or eliminate the astigmatism which will significantly improve the uncorrected distance vision of these patients. This lens is available at an additional cost. Financing options are available for this option.

Deluxe Multifocal Lens Package

A multifocal lens is designed to provide a full range of vision: near, far and everything in between. Medicare and private insurance provide the basic coverage and allow you to pay for the upgrade, if you choose to do so. These lenses greatly decrease a patients dependence on eyeglasses after surgery. These lenses are available at an additional cost. If it is determined that you are a candidate for the multifocal lens, we can discuss financing options to make this an affordable option for you.
