Our Foundation

The Laurel Eye Clinic was founded in 1973. Dr. Louis D. "Skip" Nichamin joined the practice in 1988 and now serves as the Medical Director for both the Laurel Eye Clinic and the Laurel Laser & Surgery Center. Stewart VanHorn, MD, joined the practice following his corneal and refractive fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in April 2000.

The Laurel Laser & Surgery Center was also opened in 2000. It is one of the first ambulatory surgery centers in Pennsylvania privately owned and operated by ophthalmologists. Over 3000 surgeries are performed in the Laurel Laser & Surgery Center annually, which is solely dedicated to ophthalmic procedures.

The newest addition to the practice came in the spring of 2007. A second Laurel Laser & Surgery Center was constructed near Altoona, Pennsylvania. This facility is equipped with the latest innovations in ophthalmic technology.

This landmark medical practice introduced corneal, retinal and oculoplastic surgery to Northwestern and Central Pennsylvania. This practice has performed many medical "firsts" in the area. Among these are the area's first IOL implantation, the first Argon and YAG laser treatments, and the area's first refractive procedures, RK, LASIK, and CK.

The practice continues to be recognized on a national and international level to be one of the finest practices, anywhere, and is considered among the industry leaders in surgical innovation and ophthalmic education.
